Spock is a hipster

As I begin to humbly attempt this post, please let it be known that I am not a Star Trek geek, or really an affecionado, despite the attempts of a few of my friends. This being said, any superfans that wish to flame this post due to inaccuracies that only occur to those in the Trekkie subculture, consider me apathetic to your whines and indulge yourself in a nice, cold Zima. If one is not available, use Smirnoff Ice instead.

Spock is a Hipster

As the end of the summer grows near, the amount of webjunk I have ingested reaches the level of the amount of hotdogs consumed in a Nathans eating contest on the fourth of July. For the ignorant, that's alot. One bright spot was the new tumblr site Spock is not impressed. In the midst of laughing at these collages, I noticed that the despondent glare emanating from Leonard Nimoy's face resembles a scowling hipster, or someone that has been constipated for about a month. (They look the same to me and that is what you get for wearing your sister's jeans) This leads to the main question: Is Spock a hipster? Let us have a look at the evidence....

The first thing that we take from Spock is that he is an outsider, the only "alien" in a crew mostly populated with humans. Apparently Spock was never the new kid in school, otherwise he would have known that the clear way to gain a sense of normalcy and quickly adapt to new and unfamiliar surroundings would be to blend in. Instead of prancing around making everyone look at your pointed ears, put on some freaking earmuffs. That would actually fit in your goddamned hipster chic. Hipsters have an unquenchable yearning to be considered as different and distanced from the mainstream of popular culture. Hence, why they only listen to "Indie" rock, yet through the hipster movement, indie has become itself mainstream. How do you like dem apples Mr. Hipster? So the portrayal of someone who can easily assimilate into a group environment, yet frequently refuses to fits into the mold of the "subculture member" of the group. Or just call them the stupid hipster.

The second point of evidence is that Spock comes from the wealthiest family of anyone on the Enterprise, though he took this job for personal fulfillment. This required a bit of research, i.e. watching the new Star Trek film for a second time, but I found out that Spock's dad is an ambassador. I dunno how it is on Good Ol' Planet Vulcan, but ambassadors are some rich ass motherfuckers on Earth. Typically, the role of the ambassador is filled by someone with the monetary means for political ambition, but without the years of service or experience. Think to yourself of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson rollicking round in those bordellos in Pre-Revolutionary France. Needless to say, the kids that ambassadors have don't go to public schools much less have a hard life growing up. I know some of you are going to say that in the reboot he lost his parents, saaaad panda. So did Bruce Wayne, but that guy still knows how to throw a party and not be a complete whiny bitch. (Also I imagine that the financial records of Vulcan were still left intact through some sort of galactic banking law, so he still has a shit ton of money.) So here is Spock, a loaded guy, slumming it around in a menial job because he'd rather live a more impoverished existence than he's used to, though through his family's means he return to a wealthy status at any moment. This is typical of most hipsters, who pretend to have no money, are merely waiting for their trust funds to become active so they can live a more lavish lifestyle. How do you explain they love buying $30 t-shirts at American Apparel? No normal person buys a thirty buck t-shirt, hell most "name-brand" t-shirts are only $20 anyways. No he's the type of person that drinks PBR because he thinks drinking cheap beer makes him look cool. No, it makes you look like a douche and pee like your bladder is a sieve. The only time cheap beer is acceptable is when you are shotgunning beers or doing a case race. And does Spock look like the type of person that would do that? No? I didn't think so. God I wish McCoy would kick him in the shins.

Finally, there is the most telling sign of Spock's hipsterishness, his complete disdain for everything human. Here we can identify that the people are "subculture" of the Star Trek universe because it seems that everything related to starfleet is built with Human culture and considerations in mind. Hell, the fucking thing is headquartered on Earth. Take that you piece of shit Vulcans. So again, instead of being an accommodating subordinate like he should be, he stands next to Kirk and constantly bitches how people are letting their emotions get involved in everything. This is exactly the same view that a hipster has on all pop culture. No matter what it is or how much someone likes it, the hipster has to respond that it is too mainstream for their liking, whether they really like it or not. The reason you don't have emotions Spock is because you are an emotionally-stunted individual. Insane people have "logic" too, it just doesn't fucking work sometimes. Hipster, the reason no one know the band you keep bantering on about is because either 1) No one cares or 2) They are so godawful no one is going to pay the stupid $5 cover to be surrounded by hipsters and listen to that shit. For all we know, this band could be you and your friend trying to tell us how your garage-band talent is avant garde. I don't care what your influences are, if you can't properly emulate your influences, you still suck.

Those are the three reason why I think Spock is a hipster. So when you see the Star Trek movie from a few years back, don't feel bad, for all we know Vulcan was a hipster planet, and the only thing worse than a hipster is a group of hipsters. Needless to say a group of billions of hipsters would be something out of an apocalyptic vision, with the world drowning in vinyl. If you truly want to be different and not part of the mainstream, be different, don't join a group of people trying to be different, there's a new one every decade.

A good pair of socks.

Well almost through the first month of work and I still have yet to see a full weekend since my sojourn into Indiana. And the difference between a good teacher and a bad teacher can be as simple as a good pair of shoes and socks. Through my year and a half of playing WoW I have become very familiar with the term damage mitigation. That is to say, preventing as much damage before it is actually inflicted. With teaching, that is your feet. A good teacher moves around the classroom better than a Romanian gymnast. The consequence of doing that for eight hours is that your feet feel like open sores at the end of the day. So it is very important to have good socks and shoes.

Made an off the wall itunes today, marie laforêt's Marie Douceur/Marie Colère. You may know it best for its appearance in the soundtrack of talledega nights. In its simplest form, it is a french cover of the rolling stone's paint it black. Though that would be only to those who dont know french. (My glare is directed at you,Scott) The song reflects the dual nature of the main character, since this isn't lit class, I think it is safe to say that it is the songstress. There is a polite face that we all tend to wear in public, one that conforms to the rules with which society shackles us. This belies our nature that seeks freedom and rebellion, which is the other side of the coin. Another good song that treats this subject is Billy Joel's the Stranger. When it comes to me, I am just as guilty as anyone else in commiting this charade. We all have our demons, and are reticent to let them be seen by others. In teaching, you wear one persona in the classroom and one as soon as you step off the school grounds. It can be quite maddening if you don't make peace with it early on. I've finally stumbled into a relationship where I don't have to hide those demons, though i usually have to keep them in a crate with the dog.

To slightly embellish on that last part, I have cemented my Labor Day plans. The past few weekends I have been shanghaied by the school administration into working on the school schedule, yet I have let them know that come September 3rd at 3 PM, I am peeling out of Memphis and heading NNE. It's nice to meet someone who's completely honest and not looking to impress anyone. It also helps that she is one of the smartest women I have ever met. Sharing the same vices helps as well, as we arent quick to jump on each other about them. Well ebough of that, gotta be up in under 6 hours.

Stickshift cars and air guitars

Exhaustion is what happens when and unchanging nightowl meets an unstoppable early morning wakeup time. Oh, by the way i am now employed by memphis city schools, corrupting america's youth. Unfortunately that yokes me with responsibility, and also showers me with a more than liveable wage. Heading up to indiana in less than 48 hours to try and prove finally that i can maintain a somewhat normal relationship. If the title of this blogpost is somewhat misleading, i apologize, i came up with it pulling out of harbortown. Memphis is an interesting town with culture and poverty by the boatloads. Have found a great many little niches for me, though the weather this summer has been horrific, though memphis was not the only place afflicted. Getting ready for another wow raid, so ill try and catch you guys on the flip side.

Candles and the nineteenth century.

This is what surrounds me now. Not altogether unpleasant, especially with the steady soundtrack of falling rain. If a certain female was in town this could have actually been a most entertaining evening. Alas, i am left with but a vivid imagination and a mostly charged cellphone as entertainment. Had actually managed to get into the more difficult raids on WoW, so of course the power went out.

My only sincere gripe is that there is not a bright enough candle for me to illuminate a book, for i feel that this would be the most productive way for me to spend my time. And with that the lights come on.

A return of sorts

A sincere apologies to all of you who actually read this blog and have maligned its absence the past few weeks, but life tends not to give me proper scheduling for this blog. Well soon after The Easter Wabbitfest @ Robert's, I was soon to hop on a plane to the fair city of Memphis. Well, at least it's fair if you stay in the downtown area. Beale street was nice, guess I didnt go there @ night so I missed most of the insanity. Made a trek to the outer reaches of the city for an interview with Memphis City Schools, and thus witnessed a great shift in the socioeconomic realities of the city. A sidenote, that was the first school I had been to with metal detectors installed with police providing a constant vigil of those passing underneath said device. Well after an interview process which definitely had its hiccups, it seems as if I dazzled enough for them to ask me to join their fellowship program (Job track for non-education majors). Well we shall see.
Another part of my life had struck anew with the commencement of the baseball season, as many of you know, I give the redsox all the attention a significant other would occupy if I wasnt single. Though it seems fate has deteremined that she shall start off the season as a cruel mistress, imagine the jagermeister of major league baseball if you will. So as I mourn the anemic performance of my beloved team, it has allowed me to address the more romantic *gag* sphere of my personal life. So it seems I always would rather choose a relationship with value and obstacles than one easier and more readily available, a trend which seems to be dominant the current relationship with a femlare. If you are sitting here hoping for a name, good luck, because you should know how secretive I can be. Though the long distance flirting and whatnot seems to be having a fairly positive impact, and with imminent relocation a most likely possibility, those hurdles could lower a fair amount in the near future.
Speaking of which, soon I depart for Virginia and job interviews and whatnot there. A far more desirable neighborhood and compensation have really pushed this position to the forefront of my agenda, and I hope that said interview goes swimmingly. If all goes as planned, I could try crashing White House parties soon (just kidding secret service, if they are seriously making you read this my apologies).
That about wraps it up. Would have mentioned something more about the amberchris wedding, but seeing as most of my followers were there, it seems a bit redundant to go over the events. Wish them all the best in their new life together.

A pause

There are always several moments when I have taken a pause for some sort of half assed self assessment, though usually it comes at the end of a streak of days where I have crawled into a bottle. Here it seems a weird counter balance to that, though that self destructive nature still simmers within. Finally, a breath of fresh air has blown into the stale dungeon air that is Gainesville. Like Edmond Dantes, I too have lingered far too long in a prison I never deserved to be placed (was he also @ his chateau d'if for 27 years?) Hopefully, if all ends as I have been led to believe, I will have interviews in Memphis and suburban DC before the month of may creeps in. Thankfully, both are a great deal away from the people that label themselves my family and closer to more of those whom I label friends. (Sorry Adi will still try to make the occaisonal trip to the Pcola) The trepidation I feel is that this seems too good to be real, as I have to deal with absurdity for far too long (though the good news is I now appear to be an expert on the subject). Further on illusions and reality, for the keen observer, other interests have been brewing in my life, for the keenest it should be obvious who it is. Yes, I will be moving closer to said individual in both instances, but as usual my mind refuses to latch on to reality which contains and happiness for me in this realm. I am often left questioning what is real and what is illusory, for the mind can alter reality on a whim and percieve things that are not there to be concrete facts.

Ted turner is a cybernetic being

The doors are opening.....

The doors are open....

For those of you that are unfamiliar, this is the psychlogic drubbing that one takes when using the tram between concourses at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta. This is where my second layover happens to be. The dismally grey, chisled faces I encountered in Charlotte seemed to have waned a bit, but there is a fog of melancholy which suggests the angst of the weary traveler. I ran into a slight quandry, as soon as I saw there was a flight to Paris that left around the same time as my flight. There was a good five minutes where i considered the ramifications of this deviation in plans, only finally being waylaid because i had left my passport in Florida. Oh, what could have been. There was a wendy's in my concourse which offered subsistence which i found palatable. Near there was a Sam Adams bar. Again I was tempted. Alas i diverted my escapist and self-destructive natures for the time being. After going all of my life without paying attention to fashion, i have realized i dress better than 90% of the people here simply by not wearing what I slept in. And old women wearing trashy clothing. Disturbing. Well in three some hours I shall be in the wasteland known as new jersey. Toxic avenger pictures to follow
